I think a two year commitment is a bit much to ask of a student. It
certainly won't take two years to get hands on experience. In fact, most
decent undergraduate universities can provide the same training, and at the
same time have you working towards a degree.
Some of the skills you learn working with eukaryotes will certainly be
applicable to bacteria, but more importantly, you want to simply gain
experience doing quality research of any type.
