Questions about "contact inhibition"

I am trying to learn more about contact inhibition and have these 
questions:

1. Do cells exhibit contact inhibition when in contact with foreign 
cells?

2. Do they exhibit CI when bordering a physical object i.e. glass?

3. What is the specific means by which a cell knows it is in contact 
with other cells?
