The only acceptable specimen for sputum to be done anaerobically is a
trans-trachael needle aspirate in order to avoid the numerous anaerobes in
the oral cavity.
If that is not done then an alveolar lavage or a brush would also be
acceptable.
No regular suctioned, expectorated sputum or general broch wash should ever
be set up anaerobically.
