The reason our lab chose the Trek system, I'm told, is that we don't
have to use separate Pediatric bottles or resin bottles for this
system. All bottles are the same. We use the red and blue labelled
anaerobic/aerobic bottles, respectively. We have recently started using
it for AFB blood cultures also. The system was in place before I started
there two years ago, and everyone seems to like it. Blood cultures are
worked up during the day shift. We on second pull positives and put on
new specimens as they come in. We have a very large workload, as we're
an integrated facility, and currently have four machines going. Each
machine holds 12 drawers of aerobes and 12 of anaerobes, which are
paired when they are entered. Each drawer holds 16 specimens. So, each
machine holds 12 x 16 pairs of blood cultures.
