Yes, that's what I would do. You don't need a big spectrophotometer, any
simple machine capable of measuring optical density of liquids would do....
Now I'm getting nostalgic for the old Klett apparatus. If you wanted
something slightly more complicated, and the bug will grow in a mineral
salts medium (haven't used it), you could get them to take a few samples and
measure the substrate consumption rate and increase in biomass (either by
dry weight or by protein) to confirm that they're not seeing precipitation.
