I saw it done with glass rods dipped in various chemicals and then
placed near the ends of capillary tubes containing bacteria. The
"fog" of the bacterial cloud can be seen in semisolid agar. This can
be done vertically or horizontally.

Chemotaxis in bacteria is very important because that looks like
rudimentary consciousness to me. It is not just awareness of one's
environment, but action after the awareness.
