I have this old paper...
D Karentz & LH Lutze, Evaluation of biologically harmful ultraviolet
radiation in Antarctica with a biological dosimeter designed for
aquatic environments. Limnol Oceanog 35:549, 5/90.
Their basic method was to use the bacteria as a dosimeter to measure
the UV. They lowered a container of bacteria to a specific depth for a
specific time, then brought it up, and measured the viability.
I don't remember much more about it, and haven't followed up. But I
found it an intriguing use of the bacteria.
