As funny as it sounds, when I was a kid I used to get great Volvox
growth in the 'fishmeal' medium, which consists of 0.25 gm fish meal
autoclaved in 500 ml. of distilled water. After autoclaving, add sterile
solution of Ferric chloride (1ml of 1.0% solution), sterile filter and
use.

As it turns out, this medium is also mentioned online at
http://gwis2.circ.gwu.edu/~biodl/technique/Fishmeal.html
(though I would still autoclave the stuff, rather than heat to 80C).

Volvox media is available commercialy, item #L261A at $3.95 a pint (!)
from http://www.southernscientific.com/media_handling_aids.asp
As well as actual Volvox cultures, from
http://www.berkshirebio.com/store.html

Finally, if you wish to go completely synthetic, use:

http://www.bio.utexas.edu/research/utex/media/volvox.html
(Provasoli & Pintner 1959).
Not suitable for xenic cultures. For additional modifications of volvox
medium, see HEPES-volvox, MES-volvox, P49, volvox-dextrose and YT20.

Preparation: to 978 mL of glass-distilled water, add the following in
the amounts indicated:

mL stock solution g/100 mL H2O
	1 Ca(NO3)2. 4H2O 11.8
	1 MgSO4. 7H2O 4.0
	1 Na2glycerophosphate. 5H2O	6.0
	1 KCl 5.0
	10 glycylglycine 5.0
	1 biotin 25.0 x 10-6
	1 vitamin B12 15.0 x 10-6
	6 PIV metal solution

Adjust to pH 8.0 using 1 N NaOH.

       PIV metal solution:

       To 1000 mL of glass-distilled water, add 0.750 g of Na2EDTA, and
dissolve fully.
Add the following salts in the amounts indicated:

       FeCl3. 6H2O	97 mg
       MnCl2. 4H2O	41 mg
       ZnCl2 5 mg
       CoCl2. 6H2O	2 mg
       Na2MoO4. 2H2O	4 mg

       Optional ingredients:

1 mL thiamine at 1 mg/L must be added when cultivating Volvox
capensis and
other species in the Section Euvolvox.
