Depending on the bugs in question, you can often just plate them straight
out onto the appropriate growth media that you normally use, without too
much extra loss of viability. With some of the sporulating bugs (e.g.
Bacillus) it's sometimes useful to heat shock them first, but again the same
growth medium as you normally use should be fine.
