It seems that in clinical laboratories the only upper level degree
(other than M.D.) that means anything in order to get ahead is an
M.B.A. I've never personally aspired to that degree, as I enjoy the
technical work too much. Even earning a specialty through ASCP doesn't
really do anything for your paycheck, at least at the hospitals I've
worked for. There used to be four Ph.D.'s in micro in our city at
various hospitals. One's job was eliminated about 10 years ago, two
have recently retired, and the one at our lab is the only one left and
contemplating retirement. The hospitals don't seem to want to keep
Ph.D. microbiologists on staff anymore.
