According to Difco Manual, from Nat'l Comm. for Clinical Lab Stds. MH
agar is used in antibiotic assays because it shows good batch to batch
reproducibility; low in sulfonamide, trimethoprim and tetracycline
inhibitors; good growth of most non-fastidious organisms; and lots of
data available from previous testing.
Basically, it seems that it has become the standard because of all of
the previous work done in antibiotic assays done with it, and you can
reproduce such resuslts repeatedly...always a plus if you're
standardizing things.
