2) EPSRC Research Studentship
The role of hydrophobicity and charge in determining membrane
cleanability
In collaboration with the Lappeenranta University of Technology,
Finland, a Ph.D. studentship is available in the area of membrane
fouling and
cleaning.
Working with beer, the project aims to characterise the effects that
multiple fouling and cleaning cycles have upon membrane performance and
lifetime for yeast cells and cell debris fouling microfiltration
membranes.
The objectives of the project include:
To investigate how the performance of a flat sheet microfiltration
changes as a function of the cleaning regime for over a number of
operational cycles,
To determine whether steady state filtration performance of yeast and
whey protein solutions are affected by the prior fouling and cleaning
regimes,
To examine fouled and partially cleaned membranes by using a range of
analysis tools to link surface characteristics to membrane performance.
The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath is one
of the leading centres for membrane research in Europe.
The project is available immediately, but can commence at any agreed
date before February 2001, and applications are encouraged up to this
time.
Applicants should send or email a CV with the names of two referees to:
Dr Michael R. Bird,
Department of Chemical Engineering,
University of Bath,
Claverton Down,
Bath BA2 7AY.
