In the legal context, it refers to the mental intent element that must
be proved to convict a defendant of *some* criminal offenses, i.e., the
requirement that the defendant "intentionally, "willfully," or "knowingly"
did some act, as opposed to having made a mistake or having caused an event
to occur by some accident.
