If I may put my 2 cents in (ducking for cover) when I was at high school, we
pressed our fingertips into some agar, and looked at what grew. Didn't
identify or isolate, but it was this experiment that triggered my interest
in the area. Who knows, if my biology teacher had not done this experiment,
I may now be a lawyer or something like that, and that notion frightens me!
Science teachers need a little knowledge in a lot of areas, and I imagine it
would be difficult to be teaching such a wide spectrum of disiplines, of
course there will be shortfalls in their knowledge in comparison to someone
who has spent 4 years or so just learning about one disipline.
