The biggest weakness of academics (and scientific academics in 
particular) is their fondness for fine detail. "Impact factors" is a 
brilliant example of the way in which our lords and masters can divert 
academic attention from important issues into total trivia.

I was taught this by an Indian colleague who had sussed out that the one 
thing politicians DO NOT WANT is a load of academics thinking about 
important things. So - give them lots of trivia to worry about and they 
will take the hook without even thinking. (This rather puts into 
question what they are paid for in the first place).
