differential 14C incorporation

We have been running some experiments looking at the incorporation of
single- and dual-labeled acetate, using a gram-negative bacterium.
Incorporation when the 14C is present as the carboxyl group is 30%.
Incorporation with the 14C as the methyl group is 50%
Here's the kicker: when dual-labeled acetate is used (both carboxyl and
methyl group are 14C), the incorporation is still only 30%.
Shouldn't it at least be 50+%?
Any suggestions, especially literature references, would be much
appreciated.
Thanks,
