TOC is commonly used to assess contamination by organic sources in
water/wastewater. I suppose you could use it to determine the level of
organic contamination in water for injection (but I have no experience of
this). If you are using purified water (such as double distilled) I would
expect the levels of TOC to be 0.5 mgC/l or lower. I use Ultrapure water
which gives a TOC of around 0.1 - 0.2 mgC/l.
The method I use for my work is the wet presulfate oxidation method which
involves heating the sample to 100 C in the presence of sodium persulfate to
liberate the carbon as CO2 which is then passed (via a carrier gas such as
nitrogen) to a non dispersive infra red detector, which gives a reading in
millivolts and is then converted into micrograms of carbon per litre or ppm.
The instrument I use is the O & I Corporation (of Texas) model 700 TOC
analyser. However this is an older instrument and a much newer one is now
available.
Hope this helps.
