MOLECULAR PLANT PATHOLOGIST
GENOMICS RESEARCH IN AGRICULTURE

The *Genome Initiative* from the Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada Research Branch includes the *Wheat Genomics Initiative* which is centered in Western Canada and focuses on quality improvement and two major pests of wheat: Fusarium Head Blight and Leaf Rust. The project described here is part of a larger collaborative project between the Cereal Research Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the Lethbridge Research Centre, Alberta, and PARC, Summerland, British Columbia, to understand the molecular interaction between the wheat leaf rust, Puccinia triticina and its host. At PARC, Summerland, the location of the incumbent, the research will focus on the molecular biology of the fungus while genetic and pathology aspects will be researched by CRC. At CRC, a host EST database is being built and at both CRC and LRC, plant/pathogen interaction EST databases are being generated.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-organised postdoctoral researcher with experience in plant pathology and molecular biology to build a wheat leaf rust EST database generated through the random sequencing of 10,000 cDNA clones and to conduct innovative research on revealed genes involved in pathogenicity and virulence. Expression will be tested in a heterologous fungal system. Part of the sequencing will be done in-house (PARC has automated sequencing capabilities) and part will be contracted out. Collaboration with the other centres including a bioinformaticist is expected.
The candidate should have obtained his/her PhD. no longer than 5 years ago for consideration for the ¡National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Visiting Fellowship in Canadian Government Laboratories¢ program. The position is available immediately and is for 2 years with a possible 1 year extension. Salary is CAD$ 36,785 per annum and a onetime relocation expense from current place of employment to Summerland and back will be covered.
PARC is located in the Okanagan Valley, 400 km East of Vancouver, and has a Biotechnology Section with state-of-the-art equipment and employing over 40 researchers (PIs, PDFs and students) in 10 Research Groups involved in Molecular and Cell Biology aspects of Virology, Mycology, Nematology, Fruit Ripening and Crop Transformation (see Website).
