Relative efficiency of plating compares the number of plaque forming
units found when plating on a particular bacterial strain to that found
when plating that same phage on a standard host strain. Absolute
efficiency of plating compares the number of pfu to the number of actual
particles/virions present. The latter requires quantitative electron
microscopy or some other method that can specifically identify and
enumerate virus particles.
