Ammonia production.
It certainly matters what the conditions and organism are but tryptic
soy broth has little or no CHO.Because of this the organisms need to use
the proteins for energy and have a lot of ammonia left over.
The contemporary wisdom reckons that a C:N ratio below 35:1 should
result in nitrogen release.I have found that it may need to be alittle
lower than this say 25:1 for reliable N release but tryptic soy is
probably below this.
