In my simple mind I consider it like:
You find a compound but it has say side effects or say you want to
screen for new compounds starting from a known drug or chemical. What
you basically do is chemically synthesise, on a small scale, in an
automated or semi-automated manner 1000's upon 1000's of derivatives of
the original candidate compound. Each one is then tested for efficacy
etc. The big break-through is through the use of machines that will
accomplish this sort of synthesis in a fraction of the time chemists
took doing it manually.
