PENICILLIN RESISTANCE IN PNEUMOCOCCI
For its interest I summarize some paragraphs of an editorial appeared in
"Revista Española de Quimioterapia, Diciembre de
1998"
"The NCCLS has dictated some court points very restrictive for
penicillin thinking alone about difficult to try infections
(meningitis) but not in the most frequent (pneumonia). However upon taking
these court points as reference for any infection has
provoked the idea between the clinical of a high resistance of the
bacteria, contributing to the fact that are used antibiotics
"more sure" for all the types of infections.
For pneumonia, otitis and sinusitis, amoxicilin reaches useful
concentrations to treat the infections by S. pneumoniae with
MIC 2 µg/ml. In the last years has been increased the use of the macrolides
for this type of infections and with this the number
of strains of S. pneumoniae resistant to this group of antibiotics
compelling to be very wary upon recommending these
antibiotics
