Registration for the Seventh Conference on Small
Genomes is to be held November 13-17, 1999
at the The Doubletree Hotel, Arlington, Virginia is now

This will be the seventh in a series of meetings on the sequence
and function of small bacterial genomes. The conference is the
continuation of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM)
conference series on Small Genomes, which originated in 1992
and was last held in Lake Arrowhead, California, in 1998.

This conference will primarily focus on recent advances in
functional genomics as well as DNA sequencing and sequence
comparative analysis. The conference will especially emphasize
studies (1) exploring genome sequence information to understand
various biological processes through experiments and (2) defining
gene functions and regulatory networks. We hope that the conference
will help in identifying research gaps, problems, challenges, and
trends in microbial genomics from the viewpoints of genetics,
biochemistry, cell biology, physiology, and ecology. In addition,
to train the next generation of genomic scientists, the conference
will provide partial support to selected graduate students, postdocs,
and young faculty to attend this conference.

This meeting is sponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy (other
sponsors pending) and there will be partial support for attendance
for a limited numbers of students, postdoctoral associates, and
junior faculty.

This meeting will feature invited talks and contributed posters.

Meeting Topics Include:

I. Microbial genome sequencing, microbial diversity, and microbial
      genome programs
II. Bioinformatics and functional genomics
III. Genomic technology and functional genomics
IV. Genetic and biochemical technology for defining gene functions
V. Cellular processes, regulatory networks, and evolution
VI. Systematic functional analysis of genome sequences
VII. Applied functional genomics
