Little info to go on! 
Why should aybody expect a "ladder" of E. coli DNA on an agarose gel? Are
you sure you understood your teacher correctly? Did s/he mention anything
else? What kind of DNA from the bacterium was s/he talking about? Did s/he
mention any other "treatment(s)" to the DNA prior to running on agarose gel?
