Im not really sure what you're referring to regarding people dissing 
you but...

By interperipheral membrane proteins, are you referring to integral, 
or membrane spanning proteins?  Many integral membrane proteins have 
alpha helices which form the membrane-spanning domain.  The function 
of this domain is at least two-fold:  (1) to anchor the protein in the 
membrane, and (2)  to transmit signals from the extracellular ligand 
binding domain to the cytoplasmic domain to induce some cellular 
response following ligand binding.
The other questions will have to wait for someone else with more 
expertise to answer.
