The recent papers by Ernst Mayr and Carl Woese not only mark the
beginning of an extremely important debate, they are indeed
pronouncements "concerning the future direction biology should take"
(I'll agree with Woese on this point).
These perspectives appear in the Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences (PNAS), Vol. 95: 9720-9723 & Vol. 95:11043-11046. I
recommend both papers, and feel that net.bio.net would be an excellent forum
in which to express opinions concerning the merits of the arguments
presented by these two Titans of 20th century Biology. This is very
important to the future of taxonomy, microbiology, and biology in general.
Sincerely, Ken Kinman
