I believe, if you check the July or August issue of Scientific American, you
will find in The Amateur Scientist section the materials and methods for DNA
extraction using household chemicals. The "goo" is more likely a crude
nuclear extract; but, it works for science fair projects. Any further
"cleaning up" is unlikely with household chems (unless you keep Cesium
Chloride under your sink, I don't).
