Why, if HIV does not cause AIDS, is it possible to clone out a section
of the HIV viral genome, express its protein, purify that protein,
crystallize that protein, determine the protein's 3D structure, design
drugs that block the action of that protein, and watch viral loads drop
in patients who take that drug.
This was done with HIV protease. You know those miracle protease
inhibitors that have made the news all over the world and made those
drug manufacturers a lot of $$$.
