E. coli in the interstinal tract

I recently read an article that stated theat E. coli growing the intestinal
tract has a generation time of 40 hrs and that only on strain of E. coli
dominates the intestinal tract.  I find this hard to believe.  Anyone know of
published data on these subjects.  Thank you Richard Albert
