Years ago when I was in malaria research Jensen and Trager, of
Rockefeller University developed a technique, for growing P. falciparum
a human malarial parasite in human blood in a Candle Jar. They used a
dessicator with a candle which extinguished itself when the oxygen level
lowered to about 5%. The parasites grew very nicely. This was an
enourmous breakthrough as the parasite could not be grown in vitro
before that. Of course, a carbon dioxide incubator could do as well but
not for the cost!
