Jane, It is very unlikely that you can see flagella (not fimbria) on a bacteria without special staining. If you detect a halo around a bacteria after negative staining with nigrosin or india ink, it is almost certainly the cpasule. Besides, to my knowledge, Proteus don't produce capsules. Do they??
