Effect of phenol degradation products of bacterial bioluminescence activity

I have noticed a strong bioluminescence induction of lux genes from V.
fischeri or V. harveyi by phenol. This induction was only obtained with
old phenol flask (where phenol may have been oxidised). Does anyone have
an explanation for this ? I known that phenol derivatives (iodophenol,
phenylphenol,...)are acting as enhancer of chemiluminescence reactions
but what is the effect of oxidised phenol on bacteriala luciferase
activity ?
Thanks for your help.
