LABORATORY

MICROBIOLOGY/BIOCHEMISTRY/IMMUNOLOGY
PROJECT #EMSL 94-12

A research project is available in the
Microbiology Research Division at the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA)
National Exposure Research Laboratory
(NERL) in Cincinnati, Ohio, for a recent
doctoral degree recipient in microbiology,
biochemistry, or a related discipline.

The participant will have appropriate formal
knowledge in microbiology or biochemistry,
with experience in immunology. The
research will focus on development of
sensitive and practical methods to
differentiate human and non-human
contamination, and then field testing of the
methods to determine suitability for wide
application in the water environment.

The incumbent trainee would be expected to
prepare research plans, technical reports,
literature reviews, and peer-reviewed journal
articles dealing with the research topics. In
addition the trainee will need to address
quality assurance and data quality objective
issues related to the subject research.

The postgraduate will be expected to judge
the completeness of the study, to assure the
accuracy of the results, to establish and
adhere to temporal guidelines, and to exhibit
appropriate knowledge of the technical
aspects of the products produced. The
mentors will provide technical guidance and
assist in defining U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency interests.

A doctoral degree in microbiology or
biochemistry with experience in immunology
and immunochemistry, or formal training in
immunology and experience in microbiology
or biochemistry within the last three years is
preferred. The annual stipend begins at
$33,180. Inbound travel and moving
expenses are reimbursed according to
established policies. Appointments are for
full-time research at NERL/EPA and are
initially for one year and may be renewed for
up to two additional years.
