In theory you can magnify greater than this but not in reality.  A
microscope is limited in it's ability to resolve separate items and this
is a property of both glass and even the light used.  Further as a lens
becomes more and more powerful it gathers less an less light.  If a light
microscope claims that it can magnify greater than 1500 (and actually
unless it has great optics even 1000X may not be any good) I wouldn't
believe it. To go to higher magnification you really are moving into the
area of EM scopes.
