I would try looking up the work of Bonnie Bassler and colleagues. Also
work by Baldwin. I am quite familiar with the field and I know they're
making progress. Try medline searches or there is a new review out by
Fuqua, Winans and Greenberg in the Annual Reviews of Microbiology (1996).
