I recently purchased "The physiology and biochemistry of Prokaryotes" by David
White of Indiana University (Oxford press, 1995) and find it a joy to read. It
has excellent references and notes section and study questions for upper level
undergrads / starting graduate students. I have Gottschalk, but find this one
more readable.
