I find "phyisiology of the bacterial cell, a molecular approach" by
Neidhardt, Ingraham and Schaechter to be quite good, though far from
perfect. I have a 1990 edition and don't know whether there is a newer
one. Check with Sinauer, the publishers.
I haven't actually taught a microbial physiology course using this text,
but the course in our dept. uses Gottschalk, and the students in the
course who have borrowed the aobve book from me vastly prefer it to
Gottschalk.
