There is a large literature base on this topic. Refer to Block's
book for a starting point. It is entitled "Preservation, Disinfection,
and Sterilization" (or some combination of those three words - my copy
isn't here). Also, look in the literature for work by AD Russell or
Peter Gilbert. They are two UK researchers active in the field.
