Yes, one of the most important lessons a graduate student should take away
with him or herself is the proper way in with research is done. This of
course includes the ethics used in researching. Of course, not
everyone is going to respond, but as a graduate student you need not be "spoon
fed". The PI should attempt to pass on to the graduate student ethics in
research. The PI should also see that these ethics are followed while the
graduate student is working in the PI lab.
This is in fact to the benefit of the PI, since caliber and integrity of the
lab is measured by the research and graduate students coming from that lab.
