Yes - proteins can be catabolized for their nitrogen content and this N
could be used in the biosynthesis of needed N-compounds. Whether cells
actually use this route and to what degree I am not sure (it has to
happen in extreme starving in animals but the major function(i think) is
to supply glucose to the brain). For a good intro on the mechanics of
the process i would look in a good Biochemistry book under chapters of
"Protein Turnover" and "Amino Acid Degradation". I am not exactly sure
where you would find out the current thought on how cells use proteins as
a N-reserve. Good luck
