The AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR MICROBIOLOGY sponsors
several programs for undergraduate faculty teaching in the
microbiological sciences.
FACULTY FELLOWSHIPS
Up to $4000 is available for full time faculty members from one of the
underrepresented groups in the life sciences (ie. African American,
Hispanic American, Native American and Pacific Islander) who wish
to improve their scientific and research capabilities in ways that will
enhance their ability to teach up-to-date undergraduate courses and
laboratories in the microbiological sciences. To qualify you must be
teaching undergraduate students, an active member of the Society, and
not receiving substanital funding for research or career advancement
from other sources.
1995 UNDERGRADUATE MICROBIOLOGY CONFERENCE
The American Society for Microbiology will be sponsoring the 1995
Undergraduate Microbiology Conference: Effective Strategies for
Teaching Core Knowledge in Microbiology. The Conference will
take place May 19-21, 1995 at Marymount University in Arlington, VA
prior to the ASM General Meeting.
Individuals responsible for teaching microbiology in community
colleges, liberal arts colleges, comprehensive universities, and
research universities are encouraged to attend. The Conference
will provide an interactive setting in which teaching and assessment
strategies can be demonstrated in working groups. The format will
allow for participation, critiques and networking in a flexible environment.
The early registration deadline is March 31st.
TRAVEL AWARDS
Up to $400 is available to faculty from 2-year and 4-year institutions or
institutions with a large population of underrepresented minority students
to attend the Undergraduate Microbiology Education Conference,
May 19-21, 1995 or the ASM General Meeting, May 21-25, 1995. Both
meetings are in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. To qualify you
must be an active member of the Society and be prepared to present a paper at
either the Undergraduate Conference or General Meeting.
