Help-info about mycobacterium please

If anyone can please help with info or people to contact I would
greatly appreciate it. A 5 yr old son of a friend of mine has been
diagnosed with scrofula which is a mycobacterial infection of the
cervical lymph nodes. He has had surgery to remove one lymph node but
now others seem to be involved. The mycobacterium that infects him is
mycobacterum avian complex. More surgery would be very devastating.
We are trying to find out whether treatment with the appropriate
antibiotics would help cure him of his infection. He does not respond
to the usual penicillin/ penicillinase inhibitor antibiotics. Does
anyone have any experience with anti-tuberculosis drugs and treating
children with scrofula? The issue we are most concerned with is side
effects in children and effectiveness of treatment. BTW the boy does
not have an HIV infection.
