I'm not sure if this is the answer but I'll speculate...  When I
was into amateur radio, I owned some WWII-surplus equipment that
had cloth wire insulation.  The inside of the radio was treated
with a yellow lacquer of some kind, presumably to jungle-proof
it against fungus eating away the insulation.  Perhaps fungal
growth on chronically-damp aircraft components is still a
problem.
