             <<<MICROBIOLOGY LAB MANUAL FILE BANK>>>
                       >>>Let Get Going<<<

                        15 November 1994

This follow-up is being sent to all who expressed interest
in the Microbiology Lab Manual File Bank. It is also being
posted to microbio at net.bio.net.

1. OVER-VIEW: An instructor wishing to use a lab manual may
use an off-the-shelf lab manual or generate a manual. Off-
the-shelf manuals never quite fit the local needs.
Generating a manual is an enormous job. Solution: a lab
manual file bank to which various folks contribute. Anyone
could use the materials. An instructor could make a
customized lab manual by editing the files. Although the
same approach could be used for other subject areas, let's
start such a manual for microbiology.

2. TO SUBMIT FILES: I am now asking for submission of
exercises to be included in the collection. The text for
exercises should be in pure ASCII format on an IBM format HD
3.5" disk. Images should be .TIF, .PCX or .BMP files on an
IBM format HD 3.5" disk. All images should be monochrome.
If more than one exercise is on the disk, please give file
names that make it clear which text file go with which
images files. If you want to submit materials in some other
form, please contact me. I want to make submitting
materials as easy as possible. If you wish to include notes
to me, please include them on paper with the disk or as a
ASCII file called "NOTES.TXT." Exercises which include no
images can be sent by E-mail.

I'll tinker just a bit to make the organization of the
files somewhat uniform. I'll send the submitter my edited
version. If the submitter agrees that I've not butchered
the work, the item would be included. I'll happily un-
tinker to the submitter's specifications.

3. TO RECEIVE FILE BANK: I hope to make the first edition of
the collection available in March 1995. Please continue to
send names, addresses and E-mail addresses of those wishing
to receive the collection. My current plan is to mail
disks. HOWEVER, A VOLUNTEER FTP LOCATION WOULD BE VERY MUCH
APPRECIATED.

4. CREDIT: Users would pay no fee on the condition that the
manual is distributed on a not-for-profit basis. It would
be requested that credit be given for each lab exercise in a
format such as "Adapted by Dr. Instructor from material
developed by Dr. Example Sample of Collegetown University
which is part of a collection of material available from
Paul H. Demchick of Barton College, Wilson, NC 27893, USA."

I'm sure this plan is far from perfect. However, this
should get the ball rolling. I welcome suggestions.

Thanks,

Paul
