At the conference on "Halophilic Microorganisms - Research Priorities and
Biotechnological Potential in the 1990's" held in Williamsburgh, VA under
the auspices of the American Society for Microbiology, I volunteered to
collect the electronic mail addresses of the participants and to look into
the possibility of organizing a news group focused on halophilic
microorganisms and the environments in which they are found. At that time I
was able to collect very few E-mail addresses, and after several
discussions with those involved with networking decided that the time was
not ripe for this venture.
But times have changed. There has been an explosive increase in both the
numbers of individuals connected to the Internet and in the resources
available to microbiologists. Especially important has been the
establishment of this bionet.microbiology news group. While I have no way
of knowing whether the number of those interested in halophiles has changed,
there is now an opportunity to reach and begin listing these people on a
regular basis. It is therefore my intention to put together a mailing list
for microbiologists (and others?) interested in halophilic microorganisms
and the environments in which they are found. I would like to collect
address, phone, FAX and E-mail information as well as a brief summary of
interests. I will post that list periodically to the group
bionet.microbiology as well as to any other group that makes sense. The
list should be useful to those looking for collaboration or communication
with others in this field and might aid anyone planning a meeting which is
concerned with halophiles. When, and if, the list grows large enough there
will be the opportunity to explore a separate news group.
If you wish to be added to the list, simply fill in the form at the end
of this message and send it to me as your reply.
Finally, feel free to pass this message on to anyone you think would be
interested in being listed.
I thank you in advance for any response.
