I have read with great interest your dialog about E. faecalis and E. faecium.
Helpful characteristics to differentiate the species are fermentation of
Sorbitol by E. faecalis , but not by E. faecium .
But one must must be sure that it is either faecium or faecalis not durans
or avium.
1% Sorbitol in (PY )Pepton-Yeast Broth.
This is the same when you use Arabinose, the only difference is, that arabinose
shows is only week positive reaction by faecium.
Or you can also use Tellurit : only E. faecalis (and none of the other
Enterococcus spec.) will grow in the presence of 0,04% Tellurit
