Position Announcement: Postdoctoral position in symbiotic nitrogen
fixation/microbial development. Department of Environmental Horticulture,
University of California, Davis. Position is for one year, with
possibility of further research.
Responsibilities: This project focuses on development of the vesicle,
the specialized site of nitrogen fixation in the root nodule endosymbiont,
Frankia (Actinomycetales), in relation to environmental signals.
Candidate will test and develop further an enzyme assay as a marker of
vesicle differentiation in Frankia, in cell-free extracts of Frankia
grown under varying inductive conditions. The enzyme in question is
involved in elaboration of the oxygen-protective lipid vesicle envelope.
Further work at the molecular genetic level would be possible.
Qualifications: Must have completed a PhD in microbial or plant
physiology or biochemistry, plant pathology, or related field. Must have
experience with protein/enzyme assays, physiological experimentation,
HPLC and other separation/analysis tools. Familiarity with and interest
in nitrogen-fixing systems and in physiological regulation are especially
desirable.
Starting date: Fall, 1994.
Salary: $20,000 - $24,000 with excellent benefits. Davis is a pleasant,
