Nonisotopic AA transport assays?

Dear Colleagues;

     I am seeking information on bacterial uptake/transport studies of small
molecular weight substances (amino acids, carbohydrates, etc.) which do NOT
rely on the use of radioisotopes.  If anyone has had any experience with such
assays, or can recommend references, kindly contact me at
