A comment on a VMS-specific newsgroup recommended a change to the RMS
defaults as a means to make disk accesses run faster: this works by
increasing the resources available to RMS, which by default (according to
that individual) are set very conservatively low. Specifically,
$ set RMS/BUF=8/BLOCK=120
We tried this and saw a 10-15% improvement in speed on a single run of FASTA.
Anyone else try this? Any comments? Any alternative settings?
