I'm not sure what you mean by "doesn't support version numbers" but
in my recent experience ftp'ing files from a vax to unix system the unix
system escapes the semicolon but still retains the version number.
Bascially this means that it will recognize several different version of
a file as unique and individual files.
If you can tar the files on the VMS that would be a very simple
way to expedite the transfers!
